Duties:

  • Assist with visitor area plant bed and ornamental grass bed preparation through raking, digging, and mulching.
  • Assist with planting bulbs and plants in the visitor area.
  • Assist the Animal Care Staff with maintaining enrichment garden.
  • Assist with plant maintenance by weeding and watering.
  • Assist with decorating plant beds/areas for special events.


Qualifications:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit for periods of 2-4 hours.
  • Ability to bend, stop, kneel, and twist.
  • Hand dexterity to use basic gardening tools.
  • Ability to independently push, lift, and carry objects weighing 10-50 pounds (such as potting soil and wheelbarrows).
  • Strong sensory skills, including eyesight and hearing.

*Basic understanding of plants and gardening is desired, but not required.

All Adult Volunteers must:

  • Complete volunteer orientation.
  • Wear assigned volunteer shirt.
  • Agree to a criminal background check.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Complete the volunteer application.
  • Read and abide by the policies listed in the Volunteer handbook.
  • Maintain a customer-focused and friendly attitude.
  • Contribute 48 hours per year (Volunteers who only choose Special Events are required to commit to 24 hours a year.)
  • Pay $100 adult volunteer fee (this helps to cover the cost of your shirt, supplies, training, and criminal background check.)

All Adult Volunteers must have the ability to:

  • Independently understand and follow directions.
  • Have good oral communication skills.
  • Work independently and with a team.
  • Volunteer in reasonable weather conditions.
  • Maintain a calm manner around animals.
