Streets Division

The services provided by the Streets Division include repair of streets including potholes, utility cut repairs, curb repairs and tree limbs that have fallen into the streets.

This division responds to emergencies and weather related events as needed to ensure safe conditions for residents. They barricade, sand streets, sandbag, and clean storm damage during inclement weather. If you'd like to report an issue with a city-serviced road, please contact us at 940-668-4540 or submit your request online. If you are reporting an issue online, it will be routed to the department directly if you submit your request on a desktop or laptop computer. If you use your cell phone, the issue will still get logged, but there will be some delay. 

Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) maintains California, Grand, Radio Hill Road, Highway 82 and the service roads. Please report road problems at these locations to TXDOT directly or call 800-558-9368.

Street Projects

The City of Gainesville has been working on a multi-phase streets program on several streets since 2020. The following is a schedule of all of the streets that have been updated in 2024 as part of Phase 2 of the overall mill and overlay project:

  • The paving has been completed for Buck St. Between Potter St. and Perry St. (Completed mid-March)
  • The Paving has been completed for Mill St. between Potter St. and Harvey St. (Completed mid-March)
  • The paving has been completed for Perry St. between Field St. and Mill St. (Completed mid-March)
  • The Paving has been completed for Potter St. between McCrary St. and Culberson St. (Completed mid-March)
  • The Paving has been completed for Hancock St. between Potter St. and Harvey St. (Completed mid-March)
  • The Paving has been completed for Lindsey St. between Pecan St. and California St. (Completed 4/22/24)
  • The Paving has been completed for Garnett St. between Dodson St. and Lindsey St. (Completed on 5/1/24)
  • The Paving has been completed for Denton St. between Davis St. and Pecan St. (Completed 5/9/24)
  • Along with all of the paving projects we also replaced several sections of curb & gutter as well as some of the valley gutters.
  • We have also done a slurry seal coat, which is a tar mixed with a fine gravel, on the following streets (All were complete mid-April 2024):
    • Throckmorton St. between MLK Jr. Ave. and Bird St.
    • Tyler St. between S. Taylor St. and S. Morris St.
    • Star St. between N. Bound I-35 frontage Rd. and Mill St.
  • We repaired a small section of concrete street on Main St. just west of Schopmeyer St. (Completed 4/23/24)
  • And lastly, we did a bunch of Joint and Crack Seal on several of our concrete streets throughout the city. These streets were too many to name and some of them on the list were not complete, as this was something that was bid based on quantities that would fit within the city budget. Basically this is like a tar and epoxy seal done on all of the cracks and joints in our concrete streets to help preserve them. I do not have a timeline for this part of the project, as they were all over the place.

Street and Traffic Signs

The street division maintains the street and traffic signs for the city street system.

Street and traffic signs are installed in accordance with National Standards for such traffic control devices.

Signals and Streetlights

The following school zone flashers are maintained by the City of Gainesville:

  • Gainesville Middle School located at 1201 Lindsay
  • Gainesville Intermediate at 900 N. Grand
  • Saint Mary’s School located at 931 N. Weaver

Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) maintains the remaining school zone flashers. Please call (940) 665-5312 to report any issues at these locations.

The following blinking red lights are maintained by the City of Gainesville:

  • W. Broadway at Culberson
  • W. Broadway at Dixon
  • W. Broadway at Commerce

Reporting Problems

To report any problem during normal working hours for street issues call the Public Works Department, Streets Division at (940) 668-4540.

For after hour emergencies, contact the Gainesville Police Department at (940) 668-7777 and the request will be forwarded to our standby personnel.
