Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem
When water freezes, it expands and exerts pressure on pipes, potentially causing them to burst. Pipes most at risk include those in unheated spaces, exposed outdoor areas, or near poorly insulated exterior walls.
How to Protect Pipes From Freezing
- Drain and Store Water Lines: Empty swimming pool and sprinkler lines, and store outdoor hoses. Avoid using antifreeze.
- Insulate Vulnerable Areas: Add insulation to attics, basements, crawl spaces, and around exposed pipes. Use pipe sleeves, heat tape, or even layers of newspaper for additional protection.
- Inspect and Prepare: Identify and insulate pipes in unheated areas like garages and cabinets. Consider relocating exposed pipes to safer locations.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Close garage doors near water lines.
- Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach pipes.
- Allow faucets to drip during extreme cold to keep water moving.
- Maintain a consistent indoor temperature, even at night, to prevent freezing.
Taking these steps can save costly repairs and reduce the risk of pipe damage.
Main Water Shutoff Valve
The main water shutoff valve stops water flow to the entire home, essential for managing leaks or emergencies. Knowing its location and operation is crucial for timely repairs or maintenance.
Common Locations for the Main Shutoff Valve
- Basement or Crawlspace: Often near where the water line enters the home, typically on the street-facing side.
- Near the Water Heater: Found in mechanical rooms or closets, particularly in slab-on-grade homes.
- Exterior Wall: Common in warmer climates; check near outdoor faucets.
- Yard: In some cases, underground in a panel near the street.
- Well Systems: Near the pressure tank or well.
If you can’t find your Main Shutoff, hire a plumber to locate it.
If you experience a water utility emergency, contact our Water Utilities Division in Public Works at 940-668-4540 (M-F, 8-5) or 940-668-7777 (after-hours) and a plumber.

| Winter Storm Warning | Winter weather is expected to meet or exceed local criteria. This includes heavy snow of 4 inches over a 12 hour period (6 inches in 24 hours) or 1/2 inch of sleet accumulation. This may also include a combination of heavy snow, sleet and/or freezing rain. |
| Ice Storm Warning | Freezing rain or drizzle is likely to result in ice accumulations of 1/4 inch or greater. |
| Wind Chill Warning | Wind chill temperatures are expected to be less than or equal to -18 degrees Fahrenheit. |
| Advisories - If caution is exercised, these events should not threaten lives | |
