The Home Grown Hero Walking Trail

Tree Planting Program

Are you be interested in honoring someone who has made a meaningful impact on your life or contributed significantly to our city? The Home Grown Hero Walking Trail, lined with majestic Shumard Red Oak trees, offers a unique opportunity to dedicate a tree in tribute to the “hero” in your life. We currently have spaces available for these special commemorations. For more information, please contact Parks and Recreation at 940-668-4530. You can fill out an application.

The Trail features a "Medal of Honor" section, paying tribute to the Medal of Honor recipients that visit Gainesville every April. Each recipient that visits, receives their very own Shumard Red Oak planted in their honor with a commemorative plaque. Pictured here are George E. "Bud" and Mary Day. Bud served in the Air Force and was a two time Prisoner of War in Vietnam. His tree was planted in 2006.
